Columbus was not commemorated because evil men came with him or after him but because he had the courage to explore the possibilities. He was man. Like us all, containing both good and bad, he struggled. Some saw him as a threat and a destroyer but to others he was a savior.
The Aztecs were oppressing, enslaving, and killing people by the tens of thousands[1] because they had the power to do so until the Spanish came with more power. Thanks to Columbus, who may have been an answer to these victims' prayers that abuse ended. The Aztecs were only defeated because of thousands of natives including the their Tlaxcaltec warrior allies chose to help the Spanish in order to defeat their oppressors. But oppression is a product of both power and sloth, without repentance there will always be a new holocausts in another generation. [2]
