The word blaspheme today is said to mean "speak irreverently about God or sacred things."

In older dictionaries like Bouviers Law Dictionary it is defined "To attribute to God that which is contrary to his nature, and does not belong to him, and to deny what does. A false reflection uttered with a malicious design of reviling God."

In 1916 we see William Mack and William Benjamin Hale [1] writing that the "Etymologlcally, to blaspheme is to speak ill or evil of.[2] [b] Blackstone speaks of it as "blasphemy against the Almighty, by denying his being or providence."[3]

But the word blaspheme in the Bible may have a number of different meanings because it is translated from a number of different words that are quite different.

Most translators of the Bible already have doctrines they have accepted as true before they begin to translate the text. Almost every translation also includes some private interpretation beyond the difficulties present in moving from one language to another.

A common word that is used in the Bible over 300 times but only appears as blaspheme twice is the Hebrew word barak.[4] It is a primitive root verb from the Hebrew letters BeitReishKaf ךרב commonly translated "bless" over three hundred times. It also appears as salute 5 times and , curse 4 times and blaspheme and blessing and praised and kneel down twice each. This is because there are other letters added to the word. In this case we see the letters BeitReishKafTav בֵּרַ֥כְתָּ used in 1 Kings 21:10.

1 Kings 21:10 And set two men, sons of Belial, before him, to bear witness against him, saying, Thou didst blaspheme <01288> God and the king. And then carry him out, and stone him, that he may die.

There is no additional letter in 1 Kings 21:13 but the word is still translated blaspheme.

1 Kings 21:13 And there came in two men, children of Belial, and sat before him: and the men of Belial witnessed against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth did blaspheme <בֵּרַ֥ךְ> God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones, that he died.

There are other verses that have the Tav at the end of Barak[5] and at the beginning[6]

In Numbers 23:11

Numbers 23:11 And Balak said unto Balaam, What hast thou done unto me? I took thee to curse<0779 אָֽרָה־ AlefReishChetYod> mine enemies, and, behold, thou hast blessed<בֵּרַ֥כְתָּ BeitReishKafTav> [them] altogether.

In Numbers 22:6 we see the word bless Tav at the beginning and a word for curse.

Numbers 22:6 "Come now therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people; for they [are] too mighty for me: peradventure I shall prevail, [that] we may smite them, and [that] I may drive them out of the land: for I wot that he whom thou blessest<תְּבָרֵךְ֙ TavBeitReishKaf> [is] blessed<תְּבָרֵךְ֙ TavBeitReishKaf>, and he whom thou cursest<0779 normally ReishReishAlef but here it is TavAlefReish תָּאֹ֖ר> is cursed<0779 and here it is YodVavAlefReish יוּאָֽר>."

An added Tav may appear at the beginning of a word or at the end of the word. Other letters lik Vav or Hey can be added to give more details to the meaning or use of a word such as in Psalm 134:2 where a Vav is added to the beginning and end of a word.

Psalms 134:2 Lift up your hands [in] the sanctuary, and bless<וּ֝בָרֲכוּ> the LORD.
Beit Purpose: God Dwelling Place Below - from house or God's house here.
Reish Process of Clarification The "head" or "beginning". Life's revelation.
Kaf Crown: To Actualize Potential power from spiritual to physical realm [to cover, strength]

So the word barak actually means to bless.
