The word striving appears once in the new Testament in:
Titus 3:9 "But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about the law; for they are unprofitable and vain."
It is from the Greek word mache [1] which also appears in other verses.
- 2 Corinthians 7:5 For, when we were come into Macedonia, our flesh had no rest, but we were troubled on every side; without were fightings <3163>, within were fears.
- 2 Timothy 2:23 But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes <3163>.
- Titus 3:9 But avoid foolish questions, and genealogies, and contentions, and strivings about <3163> the law; for they are unprofitable and vain.
- James 4:1 From whence come wars and fightings <3163> among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?
We also see the word striving in several verses but from different Greek words:
- Philippians 1:27 Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together[2] for the faith of the gospel;
- Colossians 1:29 Whereunto I also labour, striving[3] according to his working, which worketh in me mightily.
- Hebrews 12:4 Ye have not yet resisted unto blood, striving[4] against sin.
In the Old testament
we the word strivings twice:
- 2 Samuel 22:44 Thou also hast delivered me from the strivings of my people, thou hast kept me to be head of the heathen: a people which I knew not shall serve me.
- Psalms 18:43 Thou hast delivered me from the strivings of the people; and thou hast made me the head of the heathen: a people whom I have not known shall serve me.
It is from the word riyb [5] which is also translated strife 16 times, controversy 13 times and contention twice and a few other ways for a total of 62 times.
- Genesis 13:7 And there was a strife <07379> between the herdmen of Abram’s cattle and the herdmen of Lot’s cattle: and the Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelled then in the land.
- Exodus 17:7 And he called the name of the place Massah, and Meribah, because of the chiding <07379> of the children of Israel, and because they tempted the LORD, saying, Is the LORD among us, or not?
- Exodus 23:2 Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil; neither shalt thou speak in a cause <07379> to decline after many to wrest judgment:
