The word in Hebrew translated ''[[genealogy]]'' is yachas YodChetShin.<Ref name="yachas">{{03187}}</Ref>

In [[Ezra 2]]:62 and [[Nehemiah 7]]:64 we see hammiṯyaḥśîm<Ref name="yachas">{{03187}}</Ref>('''HeyMemTav'''YodChetShin'''YodMem''' הַמִּתְיַחְשִׂ֖ים ) Suggesting as Matthew Henry's commentary states, "Those who have no evidence that they are, by the new birth, spiritual priests unto God, through Jesus Christ, have no right to the comforts and privileges of Christians."

Was this use of the word that could mean a record of a genealogy actually about the record of the spirit by which they had conducted themselves previously?

Cambridge Bible for Schools and Colleges states: 
: "The importance attached to the genealogical accuracy of the claims preferred to the priesthood is not only a symptom of the legal spirit which animated the Jews of the Return. It goes back to the abolition of the High Places firstly by Hezekiah and afterwards by Josiah, in consequence of which a sharp distinction was drawn between those who had ministered at the High Places and those who were engaged in the Temple worship at Jerusalem. This point is illustrated by the writings of Ezekiel, himself a priest, who writing during the Captivity distinguishes between ‘the priests the Levites that be of the seed of Zadok’ ([[Ezekiel 43]]:19; cf. Ezekiel 40:46, Ezekiel 44:14, Ezekiel 48:11) and the ‘Levites that went astray’ (Ezekiel 44:10; Ezekiel 44:13; Ezekiel 44:15, Ezekiel 48:11)."

We should ask how did they go astray?

What common element distinguishes the [[faith]]ful ministers from those who went the way of [[iniquity]]?

Is it about bloodline or the Spirit by which they functioned as priests?

Did they function through [[faith]], [[hope]], and [[charity]] or [[force]], [[fear]], and [[fealty]]?

Did those [[priests]] serve the people through a [[social safety net]] from a [[table]] of righteousness provided by [[freewill offerings]] or the [[tables]] that should have been for their [[welfare]] but were a [[snare]] offered by the [[ruler]]s with their [[dainties]] counted as the [[wages of unrighteousness]]?
