Giving something up. Most people immediately think fasting means giving up food, but it can mean giving up anything in order that those resources can be used to serve others.

Intermittent Fasting

It makes sense that intermittent fasting and Autophagy[1] is the body’s way of cleaning out damaged cells, in order to regenerate newer, healthier cells, significant autophagy may take two to four days of fasting in humans. Autophagy is believed to begin when glucose and insulin levels drop considerably. Animal studies have shown evidence of autophagy after 24 hours of fasting, which starts peaking at around 48 hours of fasting. Remember that autophagy literally means “self-eating.” So, it makes sense that intermittent fasting and ketogenic diets are known to trigger autophagy.
