Copying Bitcoin

Bitcoin is open source software. 2-dimensional thinkers like to claim that anyone can copy bitcoin. In fact, there are currently thousands of copies of bitcoins (altcoins) that claim to be better. But bitcoin is much bigger than software. Why aren't there thousands of popular versions of chess?
