Advantages
- . Trained staff can possibly provide informed care based on their training.
- . Dieticians may provide proper nutrition for health.
- . Other residence may provide social activities with a sense of community.
- . Nursing homes are evaluated by Medicare, on limited criteria.
- . A nursing home will put fewer demands on family involvement.
From another point of view, these advantages can also be seen as part of if not contributing to the disadvantages.
Disadvantages
- . Expensive. 2012, the national average for a private room was $248 per day, which equals $90,520 per year.
- . Potential for low standards and sub-quality care. Some report, 90% of nursing homes are understaffed.
- . A nursing home can increase a sense of isolation and loneliness.
- . Distances to visit your loved one.
Other Options
Depending on your loved one's ailments, you may be able to provide more than adequate care.
Aging in place with family may be preferred for most people, and the whole family may actually benefit. It may seem overwhelming at first but with a little guidance and assistance from extended family, friends, and community we may avoid the expenses and weaknesses of a nursing home route and gain the social bonds protecting our own future.[1]
