Anacyclosis

Anacyclosis is an ancient political theory describing a predictable, repeating lifecycle where civilizations cycle through six or seven distinct forms of government.

The Six Stages of the CycleThe cycle alternates between three "benign" (public-interest) systems and three "malignant" (self-serving) corruptions:

Monarchy / Kingship: Rule by a single person for the public good, emerging naturally out of primitive chaos.

Tyranny: Corruption of monarchy, where the ruler acts out of greed and self-interest.

Aristocracy: Rule by a select group of virtuous, accomplished leaders who overthrow the tyrant.

Oligarchy: Corruption of aristocracy, where the ruling class focuses on maintaining and growing their own wealth and power.

Democracy: Rule by the people, established after the populace revolts against the oligarchs.

Ochlocracy (Mob Rule): Corruption of democracy, where freedom is taken for granted, demagogues manipulate public passions, and chaos ensues—paving the way for a strongman to seize control and restart the cycle as a new monarch.
