Alphaeus

In the Western Catholic tradition, there are believed to be two men called Alphaeus.

The father of the apostle James and the other the father of Matthew (Levi).

Both Matthew and James are described as being the "son of Alphaeus," but not brothers.

The Eastern Church typically states that Matthew and James were brothers. 

While, mentioned in the New Testament as the father of two of the Twelve apostles:  Matthew and James. There is some evidence that Cleophas, whose wife was Mary, and Alphaeus are the same person.

“‭25 Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene. ‭26 When Jesus therefore saw his mother, and the disciple standing by, whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, Woman, behold thy son!” John 19:25-26
