The United States could be called a religious state today. Religion was how you took care of the needy of society. the real church did it by faith, hope and charity while the state did it by forced contributions in the form of taxes. This was the conflict between the Roman system and the Christian system. All Constantine was doing was shifting the religious temples that provided welfare at the governments expense back to a charitable institution. He jumped started this new Christian Church with the equivalent of millions of dollars in aid and property through gifts. the real church would have nothing to do with these benefits from Constantine. The true Church continued to operate but Constantine's Church would eventually evolve into the Church that started the inquisitions. The real Church and its true history has been obscured.
