Milking the Cows by TSelrahc on Flickr

Naturally occurring raw milk is in danger of becoming a scarce resource. Understanding the reasons behind this conjures up memories of millions of Russian deaths due to the deliberate mass starvation created by Joseph Stalin.

Insider's notes: Below are examples of using the thumbnail feature and a gallery. They use the same three cartoon image files. Thumbnails and galleries will be very helpful in making this wiki both more aesthetically pleasing and more useful. Both depend on the wiki's ability to automatically re-size images.

The gallery probably doesn't need much explanation...there are many times when multiple pictures are posted to a page and it would be better for viewers (especially those with dial-up connections) to click on the thumbnails of only the images they desire to see. Additionally, all the thumbnails may take up only a few inches of space and the viewer can continue reading the surrounding text without much scrolling. Also, view the coding to see how much simpler it will be to add an entire gallery to a page rather than to add the images one by one.

The advantages of the thumbnails are similar except this gives you control over the size of each image, allowing for one image to appear at different sizes on several pages throughout the wiki rather than having to upload several specific sizes of the image to match the desired size on each page. And these cartoons offer another good example of how they might be useful... You can see that the cartoons have to be big to ensure viewers will be able to read the text. But shrinking them would allow for better placement within the text (right justification and text wrap-around). The thumbnail option offers the best of both worlds: the viewer sees a smaller version that is nicely placed and, out of interest, clicks it to see the full-size version.

In order for this to happen, the imagemagick extension must be downloaded and installed into the wiki and one of the settings must be set to true in the LocalSettings.php file. Instructions here: http://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Manual:Image_Administration#Image_thumbnailing
