The story of Elijah[1] is from the first book of Kings. In Greek we the name as Elias[2] a prophet and a miracle worker who lived in the northern kingdom of Israel during the reign of King Ahab around 900BC. He was accounted as a redeemer of the people of Israel from the evil king Ahab. Similar to the life of Jesus, Elijah performs what is seen as miraculous acts to demonstrate the validity of position as a messenger and prophet of God to the people of Israel.
He is called the Tishbite[3]
Elijah defended the worship of the Hebrew God over that of the Canaanite deity Baal. Understanding Baal and the sophistry of sacrifice will help to understand the idolatry of Israel and how it made the word of God to none effect.
He lived with a widow during a famine where her barrel of grain never ran out.[4]
When her son died he was resurected by God through Elijah's prayers.[5]
Through many signs and wonders some believed Elijah was a prophet of God.[6]
There was a drought for years and the coming of rain was to be a sign to Ahab the king.[7]
On his way he met Obadiah and told him to tell Ahab that he was coming.[8] Obadiah was the head of Ahab's household, who had hidden a hundred Jewish prophets from Jezebel's violent purge. But he was afraid for himself if he told the King and Elijah did not come and show himself.[9]
Elijah assured him that he would show himself.[10]
So, Obadiah went and told the king and the king came.[11]
But the king thought that Elijah was just making trouble for Israel because he felt justified in what he had been doing.[12]
Elijah took the matter to the people asking them How long will they limp between two opinions?[13]
Elijah challenged the priests of the Baal system of worship as the only prophet of God.[14]
During this highnoon show down Elijah mocked the priests of Baal to make their god manifest its power.[15]
They could not make a fire burn up their offering so Elijah built an altar and put a sacrifice on it and drenched again and again in water[16] and then prayed and fire came down and burnt it up and the water and the stones.[17]
Because of this sign some of the people returned to the way of God and away from the system of Baal and king Ahab. But Elijah had the priests of Baal slain.[18]
Elijah then predicted rain and went to Carmel to pray for its coming.[19]
Then the rain came after he prayed seven times. Ahab went to tell Jezebel and Elijah ran before him.[20]
But Jezebel went after Elijah.[21]
Elijah flees to Beersheba in Judah, continues alone into the wilderness, and finally sits down under a shrub, praying for death.[22]
Elijah travels for forty days and forty nights to Mount Horeb where Moses received the Ten Commandments.
Elijah learns that the voice of God is heard in the still small voice.[23]
Elijah sees that the people have still abandoned the way of God for the way of rulers who exercise authority and the temple of Baal[24] which was run like the Corban of the Pharisees which made the word of God to none effect with their well-favored harlot.
Elijah enlists the help of Elisha.[25]
But like the Levites and the Apostles he had to give up all his property to follow the priesthood of the most high.[26]
Elijah encounters Ahab after he acquired possession of the vineyard of Nabotha by murder. Jezebel had conspired a method to acquiring the land by making false charges against Naboth who was stoned to death and Ahab to take possession of the vineyard.
Elijah is told to tell Ahab his coming fate.[27]
Ahab still thinks the prophet of God is his enemy.[28]
But then Ahab repents of his idolatry and the foolish things he did which led to murder like Saul and David.[29]
And Elijah relents.[30]
2 Kings 1:3 But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite, Arise, go up to meet the messengers of the king of Samaria, and say unto them, [Is it] not because [there is] not a God in Israel, [that] ye go to enquire of Baalzebub the god of Ekron?

And the third captain of fifty went up, and came and fell on his knees before Elijah, and besought him, and said unto him, O man of God, I pray thee, let my life, and the life of these fifty thy servants, be precious in thy sight.
2 Kings 1:15 And the angel of the LORD said unto Elijah, Go down with him: be not afraid of him. And he arose, and went down with him unto the king.

2 Kings 2:4 And Elijah said unto him, Elisha, tarry here, I pray thee; for the LORD hath sent me to Jericho. And he said, [As] the LORD liveth, and [as] thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. So they came to Jericho.
2 Kings 2:6 And Elijah said unto him, Tarry, I pray thee, here; for the LORD hath sent me to Jordan. And he said, [As] the LORD liveth, and [as] thy soul liveth, I will not leave thee. And they two went on.
2 Kings 2:8 And Elijah took his mantle, and wrapped [it] together, and smote the waters, and they were divided hither and thither, so that they two went over on dry ground.
2 Kings 2:9 And it came to pass, when they were gone over, that Elijah said unto Elisha, Ask what I shall do for thee, before I be taken away from thee. And Elisha said, I pray thee, let a double portion of thy spirit be upon me.
2 Kings 2:11 And it came to pass, as they still went on, and talked, that, behold, [there appeared] a chariot of fire, and horses of fire, and parted them both asunder; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven.
2 Kings 2:13 He took up also the mantle of Elijah that fell from him, and went back, and stood by the bank of Jordan;
