We see the word householder appear 4 times in the Bible [KJV]. It is a translation of the word oikodespotes[1] meaning a ruler of a house.
That Greek word is not always translated householder and actually appears a dozen times[2] and is translated householde, and goodman of the house four times each. It is also transalted master of the house three times and in Luke 22:11 it appears as just goodman.
In Luke 22:11 where "of the house" is put separately we also see that the goodman [oikodespotes] is of the house [oikia]. The term denotes someone who might be the bet servant of a house, being master over all the servants but still subject to the master. The word oikodespotes is from two words. The first is oikos [3] meaning house and despotes [4] meaning a master or lord.
It should not be confused with an elder. An elder may be the oikodespotes, but he may not. In large estates, a servant would be the head of a house.
