Principalities and powers

The phrase "principalities and powers" appears three times[1] in the English translation of the Bible. It is from the Greek words Arche[2] and exousia[3] which is a reference to the power to choose or the liberty of choice. There are heavenly principalities and powers that should be connected to the Church which we see in Ephesians 3:10[1] and others connected to the world.

The Greek phrase arche kai exousia besides being translated "principalities and powers" is also translated:

magistrates <746>, and <2532> powers<1849>
  • Luke 12:11 And when they bring you unto the synagogues, and unto magistrates <746>, and powers <1849>, take ye no thought how or what thing ye shall answer, or what ye shall say:
power <746> and <2532> authority <1849>
  • Luke 20:20 And they watched him, and sent forth spies, which should feign themselves just men, that they might take hold of his words, that so they might deliver him unto the power <746> and authority <1849> of the governor.

  • 1 Corinthians 15:24 Then cometh the end, when he shall have delivered up the kingdom to God, even the Father; when he shall have put down all rule <746> and all authority <1849> and power.

Far above <5231> all <3956> principality <746>, and <2532> power <1849>, and <2532> might[4]

  • Ephesians 1:21 Far above all principality <746>, and power <1849>, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come:

Those same words appear together in other verses but in a different context.
