The Law is spiritual.

After my article on James 4:4 and adultery.

Someone commented that the Law is spiritual. Someone else asked them to expound on what that meant before I could.

But no one expounded on this reference to Romans 7:14 " For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin."

We know that "the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good."[1]

If we go onto Romans 7:25 we see "I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin."

We see Paul getting to the point in what is labeled as the next chapter Romans 8:1 "[There is] therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death."

So what Paul was saying is that if you are violating the law of God then you are living of the flesh and not of the spirit and are in need of repentance. And if you have not repented and show the works of the flesh your faith is dead as James also says and you are not really saved because your acceptance of Christ is a lie.

Many people like to say they believe in Christ and in their mind the matter is settled. But do they believe in the real Christ?

  • Mark 13:22 For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders, to seduce, if [it were] possible, even the elect.

There are many opinions about Christ but there is only one true Christ. How does one know if they believe in the real Christ or one of the many images of Christ created by different religions or denominations?

Is it not by the fruit of the spirit? If you really love the real Christ wouldn't you be keeping His commandments?

The flesh is not sinful in itself. The sin is in following the flesh rather than the spirit of the law.

What is the Spirit of the law?

The law is love.

  • Romans 13:8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
  • Romans 13:10 Love worketh no ill to his neighbour: therefore love is the fulfilling of the law.
  • Galatians 5:14 For all the law is fulfilled in one word, even in this; Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
  • James 2:8 If ye fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself, ye do well:

Do we follow the law of love or the desires of our own wantonness and sloth?

I know many people who say they love Jesus but they make a habit and a policy to bite one another to satisfy their own desires. They pray to men who call themselves benefactors but only give what they take from our neighbors. To do that is to work ill upon your neighbor, not love. So if we continue in that way which is contrary to the way of Christ and the words of Christ can we say God is doing a work in us or are we actually workers of iniquity that will be cast away?

The instructions are to repent and to seek the kingdom or government of God and the righteousness of God. Seeking that righteousness will require sacrificing some of your life, your sweat, even your blood for love of others which brings growth.[2] But if we have not repented and are not seeking the Kingdom of God and His righteousness then what growth should we expect? So have modern Christians actually repented?

Are they seeking the Kingdom of God and His righteousness?

Most Churches today do not do what the early Church did. They certainly do not do what John the Baptist said to do nor what Jesus said to do. In fact they do more things like the Pharisees. Early Christians would not take benefits from men who exercised authority like Caesar.

To desire those benefits would be coveting their neighbor's goods. The first century Church gathered to be of assistance to others seeking to live without coveting their neighbor's goods. Every week they came to give if they could and if they needed aid, they hoped people would help them. In the early church "service" was actually service. In a real Church established by Christ those that had extra shared with those who did not have enough. This was the Eucharist of Christ.

It was a "righteous welfare" that showed love for one another. Today, most church services are really of no service to anyone unless you count "tickling the ears" of the people. People today go to church to feel good. They pretend to "worship" God and Jesus with their mouth but since they have not repented and do not want to do what it requires to provide a righteous welfare for one another their sin remains.

Why did Paul say in the law is spiritual?

Do we have to keep the commandments?

But on our own we cannot because our flesh is inadequate.

If we do not keep the commandments it is telling us that our faith is lacking and our hearts are not following the law of love but the way of flesh.

The "law" written and interpreted by men who brought the people into bondage with their consent to schemes of Corban and benefits rulers who exercise authority one over the other was done away with by Christ being crucified. He was crucified for those who repented of the covetous ways of the Pharisees and had accepted the Baptism of Christ, however the law of God which was not meant to be written on dead stones remained upon the living stones.

If we truly repent, and seek to be governed by The Way of Christ in righteous service and love for one anther then God can write the law on our hearts.

The law was to be written on our hearts from the beginning.[3]

Are we doing what Christ Said?

People followed Abraham, Moses, John the Baptist and Jesus. The altars of clay and stone was a way to create the social bonds of free people. The levites led the Israelites. And the early Church followed Christ and His Way, which was The Way, and advocated a Daily ministration that was dependent on Pure Religion through Fervent charity only. This was the Corban of Christ which was not like the system of Corban of the Pharisees nor of Rome or the systems of FDR and LBJ.
The church lost "the way" when it abandoned the practice of "pure Religion" while claiming to be the Church established by Christ. The people developed an appetite for the "wages of unrighteousness" from "public religion" in the days of Constantine. Those new Christians that often failed to fully repent degenerated the moral character of society with the masses of "instant christians".
That new religion of the emperor introduced a new faith with his apostate church replacing the doctrine of Jesus with the "doctrines of men", the Holy Spirit with emotion, the truth with the speaking of "great swelling words, having men's persons in admiration because of advantage."[4]
They had a form of godliness but denied the power thereof.

Where is your religion

  • Do you only gather for the comfort it gives you, or do you gather to benefit others?
  • Christ came to serve, not be served. Do you desire to be served, or are you coming in His name and according to His character to serve others?

If we desire His Grace but we only love those who love us, then there is no Grace because it is clear we do not really believe in Him.

If we do not Repent of our Covetous Practices and are not diligently gathering together in Free Assemblies of Love for all to provide for one another in Charity according to the Perfect law of liberty then we have nothing according to Paul. According to Luke 6:32 if we only love those who love us there is no "Grace". Christ also said if you do not Forgive neither will the Father forgive you.[5]

It is not enough to hate the deeds of the workers of iniquity, but we must return to Thy first love and thy first work. To break the yoke, we need to return to the ways of righteousness spoken of in Isaiah 58 which are the ways of Christ and the early Church. And His yoke is light for it is carried by our love of one another.

Abraham, Moses, John the Baptist and Christ all created Networks of charity to care for the true needy of society without force which is how they were able to help set people free. Do you gather with His Church to attend to the Weightier matters as Christ said?

  • Are you gathering in a Network of righteousness?
  • Do you come to love others or just be loved?

Early Christians found themselves in conflict with these systems of social welfare because they made the word of God to none effect. Christians had repented of their covetous nature when they received the Baptism of Christ. They heard and became Doers of the word not hearers only.

Remember Proverbs 12:24, "The hand of the diligent shall bear rule: but the Slothful shall be under Tribute."

We know that liberty under God is not for the covetous who are Biting one another but it is also not for the slothful. If we are not congregating together in free assemblies bound together in a broad network by faith, hope, and charity alone according to the perfect law of liberty then we are not truly seeking the Kingdom of God nor His righteousness.
