To the Ekklesia in Corinth
Download Recording for chapters 1, 2, 3 |
In Verses 1-3 Paul addresses the issue regarding challenges to his apostleship and defends the issue by claiming that it was given to him through a revelation from Christ [1] by the will of God. |
Verses 4–9 includes the thanksgiving part of the letter is typical of Hellenistic letter writing. In a thanksgiving recitation the writer thanks God for health, a safe journey, deliverance from danger, or good fortune. |
Church legally defined is appointed by Christ and is a community. In the Greek it is the Ekklesia or called out for His purposes. It is not the general congregation of the people. Like the Levites who were called out as the Church in the wilderness the early Church had a job as the servants of God to the people through the kingship of Christ.[2] |
There was Division in Corinth and following verse 10 through Chapter 4 the Facts, Causes of, and Cure for divisions will be addressed. |
The Baptism of Modern Christians leaves you on a social path where your welfare was to be the result of forced offerings of men who called themselves Benefactors, but the Baptism of the Early Christian provided a Daily ministration which was the result of Freewill offerings. This meant a network of ministers operating as the Body of Christ to maintain connected Congregations that were donating the funds to the ministers of their choice to provide a communion of the people, for the people and by the people. |
If you got baptized by John or one of his ministers you were in his network. The Israelite government had been a bottom-up network from the beginning. The same was true if you were in the network of Peter, Paul or Apollos as we see in 1 Corinthians 1:12. |
Here, we have Paul warning about divisions being created, which end up destroying the hope in The Way of the kingdom of God. It was the job of the Ministers of the Church to unite the people in a Network of charity teaching the Gospel of Christ, not the denominations of Apollos[3] or Paul. Paul preached the doctrines of Jesus first according to the "testimony of Christ". He knew what it meant to be a Doer of the word. Faith in Christ was not merely what you thought or said you believed. Real belief was confirmed by your works and deeds. Paul is very clear that even if someone says they believe if they are not showing the works of righteousness we should "turn away". |
Paul had brought Stephanas and his whole house to Christ's network. [4] We know that Stephanas, Fortunatus and Achaicus provided important aid to the network in Corinth when there was a shortage and need.[5] |
Because these networks were often able to sustain themselves in difficult times they could be tempted by their self-sufficiency to become to independent and allow divisions to form. Israel had feared the same with the tribe of Reuben "beyond Jordan on the east"[6] because they built what seemed to be an independent Altar for Daily ministration.[7] Reuben remained a part of the network of Altars of sacrifice including the rest of Israel. [8] Paul is saying if we come in the "name of our Lord Jesus Christ" which was the character of Christ according to his virtuous nature of service and sacrifice, and Forgiveness through His Love and mercy, then there should be no divisions among you and we all speak the same thing, being "perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment". |
1 ¶ Paul, called to be an apostle of Jesus Christ through the will[9] of God[10], and Sosthenes our brother,
2 Unto the church of God which is at Corinth, to them that are sanctified in Christ Jesus, called to be saints,[11] with all that in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, both theirs and ours:
3 Grace[12] be unto you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.
Thank God for no lack of gifts
4 I thank < eucharisteo> my God always on your behalf, for the grace of God which is given you by Jesus Christ; 5 That in every thing ye are enriched by him, in all utterance, and in all knowledge; 6 Even as the testimony of Christ was confirmed in you: 7 So that ye come behind in no gift; waiting for the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ: 8 Who shall also confirm you unto the end, that ye may be blameless in the day of our Lord Jesus Christ. 9 God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship[13] of his Son Jesus Christ our Lord.
No Division
10 ¶ Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and that there be no divisions[14] among you; but that ye be perfectly[15] joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment.[16] 11 For it hath been declared unto me of you, my brethren, by them which are of the house of Chloe, that there are contentions among you. 12 Now this I say, that every one of you saith, I am of Paul; and I of Apollos; and I of Cephas(another name for Peter); and I of Christ. 13 Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?
Sent to preach Christ
14 ¶ I thank God that I baptized none of you, but Crispus and Gaius; 15 Lest any should say that I had baptized in mine own name. 16 And I baptized also the household of Stephanas: besides, I know not whether I baptized any other.
The wisdom of humility
17 ¶ For Christ sent me not to baptize[17], but to preach the gospel: not with wisdom of words, lest the cross of Christ should be made of none effect. 18 For the preaching of the cross is to them that perish foolishness; but unto us which are saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written, I will destroy the wisdom of the wise, and will bring to nothing the understanding of the prudent. 20 Where is the wise? where is the scribe? where is the disputer of this world [aion]? hath not God made foolish the wisdom of this world? 21 For after that in the wisdom of God the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe. 22 For the Jews require a sign, and the Greeks seek after wisdom: 23 But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; 24 But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God. 25 Because the foolishness of God is wiser than men; and the weakness of God is stronger than men. 26 For ye see your calling, brethren, how that not many wise men after the flesh, not many mighty, not many noble, are called: 27 But God hath chosen the foolish things of the world to confound the wise; and God hath chosen the weak things of the world to confound the things which are mighty; 28 And base things[18] of the world, and things which are despised, hath God chosen, yea, and things which are not, to bring to nought things that are: 29 That no flesh should glory[19] in his presence. 30 But of him are ye in Christ Jesus, who of God is made unto us wisdom, and righteousness, and sanctification,[20] and redemption:[21] 31 That, according as it is written, He that glorieth, let him glory in the Lord.

- ↑ Divide and conquer
- Romans 16:17 "Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them. 18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple." see also 2 Peter 2:18 For when they speak great swelling [words] of vanity, they allure through the lusts of the flesh, [through much] wantonness, those that were clean escaped from them who live in error.
- 1 Corinthians 1:10 "Now I beseech you, brethren, by the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that ye all speak the same thing, and [that] there be no divisions among you; but [that] ye be perfectly joined together in the same mind and in the same judgment... 13 Is Christ divided? was Paul crucified for you? or were ye baptized in the name of Paul?"
- 1 Corinthians 11:18 For first of all, when ye come together in the church, I hear that there be divisions among you; and I partly believe it. 19 For there must be also heresies among you, that they which are approved may be made manifest among you."
- Galatians 5:13-21 "For, brethren, ye have been called unto liberty; only [use] not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another... Idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, variance, emulations, wrath, strife, seditions, heresies, Envyings,... shall not inherit the kingdom of God."
- 1 Corinthians 3: 3-9 "For ye are yet carnal: for whereas [there is] among you envying, and strife, and divisions, are ye not carnal, and walk as men?... 9 For we are labourers together with God: ye are God’s husbandry, [ye are] God’s building."
- James 3: "14 But if ye have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, glory not, and lie not against the truth. 15 This wisdom descendeth not from above, but [is] earthly, sensual, devilish. 16 For where envying and strife [is], there [is] confusion and every evil work. 17 But the wisdom that is from above is first pure (truly pure), then peaceable(eirenikosfrom eirene "a state of national tranquility"), gentle, [and] easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. 18 And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace of them that make peace.
- Philippians 2: 3 "[Let] nothing [be done] through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. 4 Lo k not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. 5 Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus:"
- Isaiah 59:1-2."1 Behold, the LORD’S hand is not shortened, that it cannot save; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear: 2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid [his] face from you, that he will not hear. 3 For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingers with iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hath muttered perverseness. 4 None calleth for justice, nor [any] pleadeth for truth: they trust in vanity, and speak lies; they conceive mischief, and bring forth iniquity. 5 They hatch cockatrice’ eggs, and weave the spider’s web: he that eateth of their eggs dieth, and that which is crushed breaketh out into a viper."
- 1 Corinthians 8:1 "Now as touching things offered unto idols, we know that we all have knowledge. Knowledge puffeth up, but charity edifieth."

- ↑ “Redemption is deliverance from the power of an alien dominion and the enjoyment of the resulting freedom. It involves the idea of restoration to one who possesses a more fundamental right or interest. The best example of redemption in the Old Testament was the deliverance of the children of Israel from bondage, from the dominion of the alien power in Egypt.” according to Zondervan's Pictorial Encyclopedia of the Bible.
