Matthew 11:11 Verily I say unto you, Among them that are born of women there hath not risen a greater than John the Baptist: notwithstanding he that is least in the kingdom of heaven is greater than he.
At that time no one was greater than John.
The Greek word we see there is the comparative adjective meizon.[1] It is from the word megas [2] something that is measured greater or of higher "rank".
We see the word used in Luke 22:26 "But ye [shall] not [be] so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth serve."
This is when Jesus took the kingdom from the Pharisees because they were not bearing fruit[3] and appoints that kingdom to His apostles [4] who were His little flock[5] that they should not be like the kings of the gentiles who call themselves Benefactors but exercise authority one over the other.
Jesus talks about "he that is chief" where the word chief is hegeomai [6] which means to lead. It is true that it is not the word arche and does not mean to rule over but it is a job of rank and leadership.
