Trust ideas
The Bible talks a lot about trust. The words meaning "trust" appear in numerous forms hundreds of times.
One Hebrew word is batach [1] which means "to trust, trust in" or "to have confidence". It is without the Mem we see in mibtach.
The word mibtach [2] has the letter Mem which has to do with the flow of something as we see in the word Altars, tribute,tithe and even the word for Egypt, Mitsrayim.
Or another word chacah[3] meaning to put trust in or confide in someone or something.
And the word yachal[4] which is translated trust and hope.
Ministers of trust
The relationship between man and God is not the same as our relationship with man and man. While we may trust one another, the trust between us and God is not the same.
The Ministers of God, like the Levites, had a job to do. Their job description included the responsibility to lead the people so that they learned to trust God. As ministers their job is to get people to trust the Holy Spirit of God. Ministers of God should seek no personal loyalty of the people to them or even dependence upon them. The temptations of Jesus Christ are faced by every minister of Christ.
The Golden calf was a reserve of wealth deposited in society to bind them together. The Levites received the contribution of the people, yet they were not treasures of the people but servants of God and His spirit.
While the world offers entitlements, the ministers of God who are called out to serve His purposes offer no entitlements. To receive from God's table you must ask[5], you must knock[6].
Moses and Jesus were in agreement because the precepts of God are the same today as they were yesterday. The "Church in the wilderness" which was the Levites who were called out by Moses, and the "Church appointed by Christ" -- both churches were to be separate from the world and belong to God. The Levites were to be separate from the people[7] while they served the tents of the congregations.
If ministers gather a congregation around them, they can be tempted to hold a position of respect which may give them authority in the mind of the people. While they are servants of God, they must also remain in a position of service. People often have a tendency to put people on a pedestal where vanity may creep in and corrupt the minister.
A minister may actually covet their congregation and the attention they give and become possessive of their position of honor like the apostles began to do as they sought to sit at the right hand or the left of Christ in the kingdom.
The Kingdom of God is often the antitheses of the kingdoms or governments of the world and even the modern Church.
One of the temptations all ministers must face is the temptation of the people's trust in them. Saul was a great man who defended the people and fought for justice. But the voice of the people chose to give him power. That power corrupted Saul which lead to the Saul Syndrome.
While as ministers, we are not kings, but the same principle and temptations may apply to us if we are not careful. People have a natural tendency to put their ministers on a pedestal of influence. This subtle path of praise and loyalty can open the door to vanity and corruption.
Ministers should be on guard to not encourage faith in themselves but God only. We may serve the people as a father serves his children, but we are not fathers to the people we serve. We serve Christ together with a brotherhood of fellow ministers. Our loyalty is not to the people we serve but to the righteousness of God.
Being a minister of Christ is not a popularity contest. We are not trying to win the hearts of the people to us, but to Christ. If they do not come to serve one another, then they do not know Christ. But the minister serves Christ by turning many congregations into His kingdom through a network of service through his fellow ministers.
We have seen ministers isolate themselves and focus on their congregation to the detriment of both. An isolated minister thinks he is serving his congregation, but he is actually making them dependent upon him.
It is a great but subtle temptation for a minister to covet the congregation he serves. Without knowing it, he may begin to turn them into spiritual, emotional and even financial bread to serve his own needs and appetite and for his own corporeal and incorporeal personality.
Seeking the personal loyalty and trust of the members of a congregation weakens the people as they trust in their minister instead of God and His Holy Spirit. The people may look upon their minister, but it is not for them to look to him, nor depend upon their minister rather than God. There are no entitlements in the Kingdom of God.
When a congregation trusts in their minister, as soon as the minister is gone the congregations will fall apart.
No, we are to lead them to independence from us and dependence upon God. The minister should be the door to the rest of the network so they may learn to cast their bread upon the waters.
For several reasons, those in need should ask if they wish to receive.[8]
To ask something in the name of Christ is to come together in the name of, or character of, Christ; it is to come to serve,[9], not to be served.[10]
Trust in God
- 2 Samuel 22:3 The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence.
- 2 Samuel 22:31 As for God, his way is perfect; the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all them that trust in him.
- 2 Kings 18:22 But if ye say unto me, We trust in the LORD our God: is not that he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and hath said to Judah and Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar in Jerusalem?
- 1 Chronicles 5:20 And they were helped against them, and the Hagarites were delivered into their hand, and all that were with them: for they cried to God in the battle, and he was intreated of them; because they put their trust in him.
- Psalms 7:1 « Shiggaion of David, which he sang unto the LORD, concerning the words of Cush the Benjamite. » O LORD my God, in thee do I put my trust: save me from all them that persecute me, and deliver me:
- Psalms 16:1 « Michtam of David. » Preserve me, O God: for in thee do I put my trust.
- Psalms 18:2 The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.
- Psalms 18:30 As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him.
- Psalms 20:7 Some trust in chariots, and some in horses: but we will remember the name of the LORD our God.
- Psalms 25:2 O my God, I trust in thee: let me not be ashamed, let not mine enemies triumph over me.
- Psalms 40:3 And he hath put a new song in my mouth, even praise unto our God: many shall see it, and fear, and shall trust in the LORD.
- Psalms 52:8 But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God: I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever.
- Psalms 55:23 But thou, O God, shalt bring them down into the pit of destruction: bloody and deceitful men shall not live out half their days; but I will trust in thee.
- Psalms 56:4 In God I will praise his word, in God I have put my trust; I will not fear what flesh can do unto me.
- Psalms 56:11 In God have I put my trust: I will not be afraid what man can do unto me.
- Psalms 62:8 Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah.
- Psalms 73:28 But it is good for me to draw near to God: I have put my trust in the Lord GOD, that I may declare all thy works.
- Psalms 91:2 I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.
- Psalms 141:8 But mine eyes are unto thee, O GOD the Lord: in thee is my trust; leave not my soul destitute.
- Proverbs 30:5 Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.
- Isaiah 36:7 But if thou say to me, We trust in the LORD our God: is it not he, whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah hath taken away, and said to Judah and to Jerusalem, Ye shall worship before this altar?
- Isaiah 50:10 Who is among you that feareth the LORD, that obeyeth the voice of his servant, that walketh in darkness, and hath no light? let him trust in the name of the LORD, and stay upon his God.
- Jeremiah 46:25 The LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, saith; Behold, I will punish the multitude of No, and Pharaoh, and Egypt, with their gods, and their kings; even Pharaoh, and all them that trust in him:
- Mark 10:24 And the disciples were astonished at his words. But Jesus answereth again, and saith unto them, Children, how hard is it for them that trust in riches to enter into the kingdom of God!
- 2 Corinthians 1:9 But we had the sentence of death in ourselves, that we should not trust in ourselves, but in God which raiseth the dead:
- 2 Corinthians 5:11 Knowing therefore the terror of the Lord, we persuade men; but we are made manifest unto God; and I trust also are made manifest in your consciences.
- 1 Thessalonians 2:4 But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts.
- 1 Timothy 4:10 For therefore we both labour and suffer reproach, because we trust in the living God, who is the Saviour of all men, specially of those that believe.
- 1 Timothy 6:17 Charge them that are rich in this world, that they be not highminded, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who giveth us richly all things to enjoy;
- Hebrews 2:13 And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me.
