Korah
Korah or Kórach is a name which is associated with at least two men in the Hebrew Bible. Some older English translations, as well as the Douay Bible, spell the name Core, and many Eastern European translations have Korak. It is said to mean "baldness".
There was Korah the son of Izhar, grandson of Kohath, great grandson of Levi and leader of the rebellion of the Israelites against Moses and Aaron while in the wilderness. He was punished and died by an earthquake and flames of fire which consumed him and others.
The third son of Esau by Aholibamah and one of the dukes of Edom was named Korah.
The Korah or Core we see mentioned in Jude is associated with Balaam and Cain.
Moses and Korah came into dispute over worship and might be associated with something called "strange fire". [1]
When Moses was challenged by Korah Moses prostrated himself on the ground before the company with Korah and told them to get their censers[2] and kindle in them their fire. Was this part of the "strange fire" metaphor seen back in Leviticus 10?
- Jude 1:11 (KJV): "Woe unto them! for they have gone in the way of Cain, and ran greedily after the error of Balaam for reward, and perished in the gainsaying of Core."
- Jude 1:11 (NIV): "Woe to them! They have taken the way of Cain; they have rushed for profit into Balaam's error; they have been destroyed in Korah's rebellion."
In verse Jude 1:10 we see that the people had corrupted themselves because they did not know the truth and their "brute beast" nature took over.
- "But these speak evil of those things which they know not: but what they know naturally, as brute beasts, in those things they corrupt themselves."
False teachers use quotes from the Bible to creep into the minds of the people to change their thinking about the Gospel of the Kingdom. The serpent in the garden did the same thing, and the draw of Babylon entices because it presents many of the same ideas presented in the gospel. The Levite, Korah, drew a following by presenting his version of logic and evaluation (see Numbers 16, verse 3 and the whole chapter).
- Numbers 16:5 And he spake unto Korah and unto all his company, saying, Even to morrow the LORD will shew who are his, and who is holy; and will cause him to come near <07126> unto him: even him whom he hath chosen will he cause to come near <07126> unto him.
- Numbers 16:40 To be a memorial unto the children of Israel, that no stranger, which is not of the seed of Aaron, come near <07126> to offer incense before the LORD; that he be not as Korah, and as his company: as the LORD said to him by the hand of Moses.
